KARINA M E A N G O

TYPOGRAPHY

A shadow play technique based on the short story 'In a Grove' by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. It presents three varying accounts of the murder of a samurai, Kanazawa no Takehiro. A complex and contradictory vision of events that brings into question humanity's ability or willingness to perceive and transmit objective truth.

Using the shadow play technique you can layer any piece of paper together forming a complete story from 3 different people Tajomaru, Masago and Takehiro, resulting in 3 different versions of your own. The transparency of the papers symbolizes each people and how they are born clean and pure but then lies and jealousy over writes everyone, staining them with bold ink. You can rearrange the sequence of the sheets and be the judge to who's story is the truth.
